Feather edge fencing
Feather edge boards are the tapered vertical boards used to build close board fencing. Understanding how they work explains why this style of fence behaves so well over time.
How the board profile works
Each board is thicker on one edge than the other. Fixed with the thick edge overlapping the thin edge of the previous board, the result is a continuous face with no gaps, and enough overlap to absorb the natural shrinking and swelling of timber through the seasons.
That movement tolerance is the point. A butt-jointed board fence opens up gaps in a dry summer; feather edge does not.
Fixing and finishing
Boards are nailed or screwed to arris rails, kept clear of the ground by a gravel board, and protected at the top by a capping rail. Individual boards can be replaced later without dismantling the run.
