Post and rail fencing

Post and rail marks a boundary without closing off a view. It is the standard choice for paddocks and large open plots, and it works well on the semi-rural edges of our area.

Configurations

Two rail for simple demarcation, three rail as the general-purpose standard, four rail where you need more containment. Rails can be nailed to the face of the post or morticed into it — morticed is stronger and neater, and costs more.

  • Two, three or four rail
  • Round or square posts
  • Face-fixed or morticed rails
  • Stock netting added for livestock, dogs or rabbits

Adding containment

On its own, post and rail will not contain small animals. Stock netting or weldmesh fixed to the inside face turns it into a containment fence while keeping the open look from outside.

Frequently asked questions

Will post and rail keep a dog in?
Not by itself. Add stock netting or weldmesh to the inside face and take it down to ground level.
How long does post and rail last?
Pressure-treated post and rail in reasonable ground typically gives many years of service; posts are usually the limiting component.
